Meaningful Ways to Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.

In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day our office will be closed on Monday and so will the stock market.

Here are 5 ideas for how you can spend your day celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

  1. Watch a documentary such as Eyes On the Prize or Selma
  2. Take a virtual tour of the Civil Rights Museum
  3. Buy & read a book that helps educate us on racism in America. Buy it from a Black-owned book shop and read it at a local, Black-owned coffee shop to support small business. Some shops may be closed Monday, so make a point of visiting later this month! Add a coffee date with yourself to your calendar and treat yourself to a good book.
  4. Access & view an archive of King's speeches. Check out The King Center, established in 1968 by Dr. King’s wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King. Check out Stanford University’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute and its Papers Project.
  5. Volunteer in your local community or donate to civil rights organizations (Charity Navigator presents this list of highly-rated nonprofits whose missions are focused on defending civil rights, protecting legal rights, and/or promoting tolerance and understanding among different races, ethnicities, genders, religions, and cultures. The 3- and 4-Star charities included in this list have earned their ratings by being financially efficient and transparent in their operations).

Make it a meaningful day of reflection, community action and a reminder to continue to raise your voice in the name of peace and justice. “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.”
